In His Own Words
About him
I am, by temperament, an amateur philosopher with a weakness for curious questions, improbable exaggerations, and a steady undercurrent of humour. I have never seen much point in mooching around shops or making polite remarks about the weather, but if you enjoy conversations that skip between life’s mysteries and its absurdities, we may find ourselves entertained, at the very least.
Socrates mentioned, “The unexamined life is not worth living,” and I rather agree with him, though I imagine he would also have appreciated the need for irony, a little mischief, and a glass of decent wine. I live somewhere between the serious and the ridiculous, and life’s stranger moments still make me smile more often than they should, even after the obstacle course of a life I volunteered for.
Travel needs a purpose: art, history, faith, family, or simple curiosity. I am not much for aimless wandering, but give me a purpose and story to follow and I will be packed before the tickets are confirmed.
Family keeps me anchored. My children and grandchildren provide joy, perspective, and, as is only right, the occasional gentle teasing. Good manners come naturally, although sincerity matters more to me than performance.
I value solitude without mistaking it for isolation. In my experience, it takes at least two years to know someone, and even then, there is always the capacity to get it wrong. Managing expectations is a constant juggle, and so, remaining realistic, in the September of my life, I would welcome a companion to share ideas, conversation, food, wine, and the occasional adventure, without merging bank accounts or calendars. But if the vein of harmony, trust, and faith is struck, I may be glad to mine the gold.
About his ideal match
You are thoughtful and steady, with a wry sense of humour and a kind heart.
You enjoy conversations that move easily between the serious and the absurd, and you prefer curiosity to certainty.
You find pleasure in lingering over a good meal, getting lost in a book, a piece of music, or a place with a story. You value days that leave room for discovery without the need to fill every moment.
You are comfortable with the idea that faith might matter to someone else, even if it takes a different shape for you. Kindness, tolerance, and a sense of proportion matter more to you than keeping score.
You value your independence and your peace, but you recognise the quiet adventure of companionship: not as a merger, but as two distinct lives choosing to lean together from time to time.
Above all, you believe that small kindnesses endure, that laughter defuses life’s dramas, and that life is best lived with a sense of wonder, even when it insists on being slightly ridiculous.
