About him
I'd like to be clear that I am using this site with the aim of making at least one close personal friend (male or female) rather than for a romantic or intimate relationship. I am still living with my wife of nearly 40 years because of some long-term family problems and caring responsibilities although its been a platonic relationship for many years. I recently retired from a very demanding and satisfying career in the charity sector and relocated to the South Coast from London. My work colleagues formed my social network so I am keen to make new friends nearer to where I live. I have tried various social groups for retired people but that's not a great environment for me as I am partially deaf and while I can manage very well in conversations with one or two people, I'm a bit lost in larger groups. I also volunteer with some local charities and I enjoy that but no friendships have developed from that either. I am very interested in current affairs, history and arts of all kinds without taking things too seriously. I've not been one for sports or hobbies but am open to trying new activities.

Probably most important is shared values. I try to be compassionate, thoughtful and honest and expect the same from others. I care deeply about the state of the world and our society and try to learn more and understand better the difficult challenges facing us, but to approach them positively and constructively as there's also a lot of good in our lives. I would hope to find someone with a similar outlook. I also hope that there are people on here who will understand why I am doing this and accept that I am trying to be open and honest about my situation.
