About him
By nature I’m warm-hearted, informal, friendly, curious about the lives of others, open and giving. I’d like to meet a woman who is similar, a giver too in life. Normally light-hearted, laughter and a sense of fun are very important to me. Beauty in nature and the arts has been my touchstone in life.
I live in the countryside, couldn’t do otherwise, although I enjoy visiting London and travel abroad. Decades ago I planted a woodland of native hardwood trees, many now 15 or 20 metres tall. I walk a lot, many miles a week, mostly for the sheer pleasure in what I find as I go. (I also go twice a week to a personal trainer.) I’ve been on guided walking trips in Sicily, Calabria and Tuscany.
The visual arts and music are very important to me too. Paintings have long been my passion and, more recently, hand-painted antique porcelain.
My favourite spots abroad have been Namibia and the Kalahari, elsewhere in East Africa, Bhutan and Patagonia; and I have climbed up the Tsingys in the west of Madagascar (my son lived there for eleven years). Also Italy (I’m learning Italian) and inland Spain for its austere beauty.
I admit I sometimes write verse! My son, a proper poet, told me “Dad, no-one writes verse like that any more”, meaning it rhymes and has meter. It all started with a camping trip in Madagascar, which led me to write a cautionary poem for young lemurs about the dangers of the fossa.
I’m retired from a successful career as a partner in a major international law firm, but my career never defined my sense of self.
I’ve spent 30 years rescuing and restoring with huge satisfaction an ancient house which has medieval meadow and ancient, semi-natural woodland.
I am deeply fond of my three children and their families, but they very much have their own lives.
Generally I feel fortunate and privileged in life. It would be lovely though to meet the right woman with whom to share life.
